The Paramus Board of Health is a legally constituted, autonomous body appointed by the Mayor to make health policy for the Borough.  The Board is empowered by State statute to enact local ordinances to protect the public health and to provide programs in five major areas, including Administration, Environmental Health, Communicable Disease Control, Maternal and Child Health, and Chronic Illness Detection and Control.   It is also responsible to appoint its’ own personnel to the Department of Health.  Members of the Board and the Health Officer meet on the fourth Monday of each month except for July and August at 8:00 PM.

The Board of Health provides the residents of the Borough with a number of state-mandated programs, including the inspection of retail food establishments, education and training of foodhandlers and management personnel, food and beverage vending machine inspection, bacteriological sampling of food and dairy products, response to citizen complaints, youth camp inspection, insect and rodent control, rabies control, recreational bathing facility inspection and sampling, and occupational health.

Personal health services provided include child lead screening, school health, including supervision of child immunization records, ongoing adult health counseling sessions, including blood pressure screening, influenza a immunization programs. Community Health Programs provided  by Valley Hospital which presents an opportunity for residents to avail themselves of a variety of health screenings, lectures by physicians and many resources.  Annual Blood Chemistry Screening is provided, and a variety of health education and health promotion programs are available to community groups.  The department is also responsible for the investigation and reporting of cases of communicable disease.

Employee Health Services provided by the Board include Worker and Community Right to Know Training, Bloodborne Pathogens Training and Immunization, Employee TB testing, and Federal substance abuse training and testing for commercial drivers.

The Board of Health is also responsible for registering and recording Vital Statistics, including birth, marriage, domestic partnership and death records.

Programs

Environmental Health

1. Monitoring and enforcement of all applicable federal, state, and local environmental health laws and regulations, as they apply to bathing places, youth camps, food establishments, food & beverage vending machines, body art establishments, beauty parlors, nail salons, pet shops, kennels, hotels, multiple dwellings, insect and rodent infestations, potable water, and air, noise, and stream pollution control.

2. Investigation of all environmental health complaints.

3. Rabies control and animal bite investigation.

Health Education

The provision of a variety of planned education programs by a professional health educator to any interested resident, civic, service or professional group.

Public Health Nursing

1. Provision of a child health conference service for qualifying infants through eighteen years of age which includes immunizations against childhood diseases, and nurse and physician counseling.

2. Provision of lead poisoning control services including screening of Paramus children one year through six years of age.

3. Provision of free adult health assessment and counseling adults for high blood pressure, diabetes and other chronic health conditions.

4. Annual Blood Chemistry/PSA/Thyroid Screening, A1C, VD and Flu Immunizations.

5. Skin Cancer Screening

Vital Statistics

The Paramus Board of Health maintains records of births, marriages, civil unions and deaths that have occurred in Paramus and issues marriage and civil union licenses.
