Mission Statement:

The Department of Public Works provides essential services to the residents of Paramus in a prompt, courteous, safe, efficient and cost effective manner.  The Public Works, through its dedicated employees, strives to plan, design, build, maintain and operate public infrastructure in a manner that respects the environment and ability of government to adequately preserve these assets for succeeding generations.

The Paramus Department of Public Works is comprised of several divisions which include sanitation, recycling, roads, sewers, fleet maintenance, quality of life and building and grounds.

The Department is open from 7:00am to 4:30pm Monday thru Friday with the exception of Borough Holidays. A few of the DPW responsibilities are:

  • Street maintenance and repairs
  • Street cleaning
  • Leaf collection
  • Sanitation and recycling collection
  • Sewer maintenance and repairs
  • Snow removal
  • Fleet maintenance and repairs
  • Public building maintenance and repairs

The Public Works Department enhances the quality of life through responsible and sound management, innovation, teamwork and vision and to provide dependable, high quality, cost effective and responsive public works to the residents, businesses and visitors of the Borough of Paramus.

2017 Sanitation and Recycling Calendar
The 2017 Sanitation and Recycling calendar will be mailed out at the end of December. The calendar can also be viewed by clicking the attached:

Curbside leaf collection to begin October 1st.

Grass and leaves may be put into the curb-line loose and un-bagged for pick up by the leaf machines.  NO BRANCHES OR TWIGS.  No resident or landscaper will place leaves in the street after November 30th.  Beginning December 1st, you must follow rules for vegetative waster.  NOTE:  During leaf season residents may continue to put leaves and grass in garbage pails or biodegradable paper bags which will be picked up every Wednesday.

CURBSIDE PICKUP

Kitchen garbage must be bagged and placed into covered automated collection container and placed at curb. Garbage will no longer be removed from any other area of your property.

If a medical or physical condition exists that would prevent you from complying with this change please contact the Paramus DPW Office, 201-265-2100, extension # 3100.

 

Computers, Electronics, and TV's Are Scheduled Collection Items

Computer and electronic items will be scheduled for collection at the curb twice (2) a month by calling the DPW Office: 201-265-2100 extensions # 3100.

 

What Do I Do With

Branches, Brush, and Limbs

These items will be picked up the same day as your recycling OTTO container and must be cut into four foot lengths and tied in small bundles.  Note: We will only pick up 10 reasonably sized bundles.  We do not pick up branches larger than 8" in diameter, tree trunks, stumps, or roots.  These items are the sole responsibility of the homeowner, resident, or contractor.  DO NOT put garden debris in recycling container.

 

Building Materials

All materials from construction, renovations or demolition, including but not limited to sheetrock, shingles, cabinets, Formica, wood, etc. ARE NOT considered garbage, trash, or refuse and WILL NOT be collected by the borough. WE DO NOT PICK UP ANY TYPE OF WOOD INCLUDING FENCING.  THE DISPOSAL AND COST OF DUMPING THESE MATERIALS ARE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR OR RESIDENT.  Contractors hired by residents are responsible for removing their debris.

 

Cardboard

Must be collapsed and tied and placed at the curb the same day as the newspapers.  Cardboard and newspapers must be secured to keep them from being blown away by strong winds.

 

Commingled

Can be either brought to the Recycling Center or placed in the OTTO container and will be picked up on your scheduled OTTO container recycling day.  Commingled consists of aluminum, tin, and metal cans, glass bottle and jars, plastic beverage containers, soda, laundry detergent and bleach bottles.  All of these items must be emptied and washed to remove beverage and food waste.

 

Computers and Electronics

Computer and electronic items will be scheduled for collection at the curb twice (2) a month by calling the DPW Office, 201-265-2100 Extension # 3100.  They can also be brought to the Recycling Center and placed in the electronics dumpster during Recycling Center Hours of Operation.  This category includes but is not limited to TV’s, Computer Monitors and Computer Equipment (Keyboards, Mice, Laptops, Power Sources, Hard Drives, Modems, Printers, etc.), Stereo Radios, Faxes, Copy Machines, VCR’s, DVD’s & Cell Phones.

Garbage & Trash

Garbage is considered kitchen food scraps only.  Trash includes miscellaneous materials such as chairs, tables, mattresses, rugs (must be cut into 3 foot lengths, rolled & tied) and other materials that are not recyclable.  Trash must be separated from kitchen garbage and is only picked up at the end of the week scheduled pick up.

 

Leaves

Leaf Pick Up: October 1st - November 30th

PLEASE NOTE:

Beginning October 15th, 2012 the Borough of Paramus began using a new automated leaf collection system. This equipment will enhance efficiency and productivity as well as the safety of borough employees.

Only loose leaf material can pass through the new vacuum system. Branches and sticks are NOT to be mixed with the leaves, as the machine is not designed to pick up other debris. Leaf piles mixed with debris will not be collected and it will be the resident’s responsibility to remove all brush and branches from the pile before it will be collected. Sticks and branches must be bundled and can be disposed of in accordance with your recycling calendar schedule.

Miscellaneous Items

Miscellaneous materials such as chairs, tables, mattresses, rugs (must be cut into 3 foot lengths, rolled & tied) and other materials that are not recyclable can be disposed of on your scheduled Garbage/Trash day at the end of the week.  Click here for further information

 

Motor Oil

Used motor oil CANNOT go into the OTTO container.  You must bring it to the recycling center.

Newspapers

Must be tied securely or placed in brown paper bags only.  DO NOT PUT IN PLASTIC BAGS OR PAILS.  Newspapers do not go into the recycling OTTO container.  Magazines, soft and hard cover books, and junk mail may be put out with the newspapers

Vegetative Waste

Consists of lawn and garden debris; grass, leaves, plants.  These items are to be put into resident owned, covered containers with handles, or biodegradable paper bags only.  THERE IS A 40LBS WEIGHT LIMIT PER CAN OR PAPER BAG.  VEGETATIVE WASTE IN PLASTIC BAGS WILL NOT BE PICKED UP OR EMPTIED.  NO ROCKS! NO DIRT! NO BRANCHES!


White Goods

Boilers, washers, dryers, hot water heaters, stoves, refrigerators, bed frames, sofa bed frames, and all aluminum and metal will be picked up by appointment only.  REFRIGERATORS MUST HAVE DOORS REMOVED. We do not pick up automobile parts of any kind. Call 201-265-2100 Extension # 3100 to make an appointment prior to putting items at the curb.
